It is a sad and heartbreaking fact that some of us will end our days alone, friends and family gone or far away. A pet can often make the difference between a healthy, engaged senior citizen and a quick, lonely decline.
The folks at The Cinnamon Trust know the value of animal companions and this British charity is dedicated to helping elderly and terminally ill pet lovers find unconditional love — and peace of mind that their pets will receive care after their death.
The trust has a volunteer network of foster homes and offers various pet-care services for owners who become incapacitated. Seniors who live at home and need help cane also benefit, thanks to volunteers who will walk the dog, buy cat food, etc. Short-term care is also available.

If someone’s pet dies, the trust can match a pet with a loving home. If that is not an option, the pet can be care for in a calm, cage-free sanctuary. Should a pet owner have to move to a nursing home, they can receive photos and updates about their pet.
The Cinnamon Trust is a charity and does not charge for its services. Donations are of course accepted and if an owner can make some contribution toward their pet’s care, it helps.

That sounds like a fabulous idea. My mum works at the hospital, and she met an elderly gentleman who was super stressed about his cat being at home while he was sick.

Nice to meet you, too. No one should have to worry about a beloved pet if they have the misfortune to become sick, or worse.
The Cinnamon Trust is a really good idea. I hope that someone does something similar in the United States. I keep hearing sad stories of senior cats spending years at no-kill shelters waiting for someone to take them home.

There may be small programs somewhere in the States, I’m not sure. But it would be nice to have such a program established as a subset to a major humane society’s outreach.
