There’s a warm, furry medical testing device in Florida. His name is Elijah and this kitty can detect diabetes in humans.

Elijah can smell ketones — an indicator of high blood sugar — in someone’s breath. The orange-and-white cat apparently taught himself this life-saving skill.

More than 18 million Americans suffer from diabetes, so imagine what the power of the purr could do for health care.

The signs of low blood sugar include:

  • Hunger
  • Confusion
  • Nervousness
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Sleepiness
  • Trouble speaking
  • Feeling weak.

Signs of high blood sugar include:

  • Confusion
  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Extreme thirst
  • Warm, dry skin that does not sweat
  • High fever
  • Loss of vision
  • Hallucinations.
